Thelma Elnora Hamm of Philomath passed away peacefully March 9 at the Corvallis Manor. She was 92 years old.
Thelma was born in Pleasant Valley-Sweet Home on Oct. 8, 1915, to Fred and Ruby (Hawk) Smith. During her youth she lived in Sweet Home, Black Rock, Munkers' Station-West Scio and Philomath. She met Bruce Hamm Sr. while picking hops in the hop fields by what is now Crystal Lake Drive. They married on Aug. 25, 1932. They purchased a ranch west of Philomath and raised a family of five children.
Thelma was a daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother to five generations of Oregon loggers.
Thelma worked in the cannery located on Ninth Street in Corvallis for many years. She then worked in the shoe department at the Corvallis JC Penney store until retirement. Thelma was preceded in death by her husband, Bruce Sr.; two brothers, Milo and Floyd; and a sister, Wilma. She is survived by her son Bruce Jr. (Janeth) of Philomath; daughter Laura Knudson (Dick) of Philomath; son Stephen (Sharon) of Sisters; son Ronald (Sue) of Corvallis; son Timothy (Lana) of Olympia, Wash.; sister, Marlene Taylor of Porterville, Calif.; as well as 16 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members.
There will be a graveside service for the family at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, March 13, at Crystal Lake Cemetery in Corvallis.
The service will be given by her son Tim Hamm.
